 FAQs

  • These individuals have undergone an intensive 14-week nutrition course covering equine nutrition curriculum, business modules, interactive case studies, and 3-4 hours per week of live sessions.

Upon their completion of the educational content modules, these individuals have taken and passed a written and verbal proficiency test to earn their certification.

These individuals are well versed in making balanced, unbiased, science-based nutritional recommendations for all types of horses with varying performance, condition and health needs.

All individuals offer programs unique to their business and they are not employed by Legacy Equine Nutrition.

  • The written proficiency test consists of 100 questions and a score of 85% must be achieved to be considered a pass. The questions are based on the educational modules that are part of the course.

The verbal proficiency test is a 1.5 hour one-on-one session between Dr. Mottet and the Advisor. In this session, case studies on four unique horse situations are reviewed. In this session, the Advisor must come up with a balanced, health-promoting, scientifically sound nutritional recommendation for each horse. Accuracy, balance, and program justification must be demonstrated for a pass to be awarded.

  • Look under the Courses tab on our website to get more information on our Advisor course.

  • The backgrounds in the group vary widely. Most are professionals in the equine industry (trainers, bodyworkers, veterinarians, professional riders, etc.) and have an extensive equine background.

Some in the group had not previously worked professionally in the equine industry but have extensive history owning, showing and/or loving horses.

Below is a note from Dr. Mottet on qualifications to take the course and how the diverse backgrounds all work with this career path.

“When I (Dr. Mottet) worked for a feed company prior to going independent as a nutritionist, I trained many company reps, interns and feed store employees how to successfully make nutrition recommendations for every kind of horse you can imagine. Even with very diverse backgrounds (interns, those coming right out of college, and those with very limited knowledge on equine nutrition) I was able to effectively teach others how to do this and do it well.

This is something I have great passion for doing, which is why I continue to offer the Advisor course so I can teach others how to make balanced, effective nutrition recommendations for horses.

So if you’re thinking right now you need to work with a PhD to get the best diet for your horse, I encourage you to consider an Advisor. This group knows their stuff and when they have questions, they have direct access to an unbiased PhD Equine Nutritionist to help them.”

    -Dr. Mottet

  • Both. All have the tools to offer you a high quality program from a distance, and most also love getting on-farm in their geography to work with horse owners. Contact them directly to get more information.

  • All Advisors have their own unique areas of expertise, however, they have the practice and tools to make recommendations for horses across disciplines, in different life stages, and for those affected by health challenges that require dietary intervention.

*Complex cases may be reviewed by Dr. Mottet. Please check with your Advisor to learn what options exist.

  • All Advisors offer a one-time consult or extended guided programs for horses and herds.

These programs include a comprehensive nutrition program evaluation, health history review, and a one hour nutrition consultation and goal planning session to discuss you and your horse’s needs.

These programs will vary slightly in how they are fulfilled by each Advisor, so make sure to get full details prior to booking your horse’s program.

Further, numerous advisors have expertise in other areas of the equine industry (ex. Bodywork, training, saddle fitting, veterinary practice) and may offer packages with multiple services. Check with them for more details!

  • Advisors will be similarly priced, reach out to them directly for a quote.

There is also an option to have your program reviewed by Dr. Mottet, which will result in an additional expense.

  • Advisors offer both and this will depend on your preferences and what’s best for your horse.

If you don’t like grain and want to keep it out of your program…

No problem, we can create a balanced diet without grain for your horse!

If your horse is an upper level competition horse that needs fuel (grain) to perform their best…

We’ve got you covered here too!

If you’re uncertain about what your horse needs, your Advisor can guide you to the best nutrition program for your horse. All programs promote optimal condition and performance, health, and longevity - no matter what the approach!

  • Certified Legacy Equine Nutrition Advisors do not work for feed or supplement companies.

This means that all brands of your products and/or feed will be reviewed fairly. Our mission is to deliver the science on your current program (feed, hay, supplements) and help you make the best decisions moving forward.

*A few Advisors are set up as vendors for certain supplements. You will not be pressured in your consult to purchase any products.

  • At this time, there are a few ways to work directly with Dr. Mottet:

Take one of her courses - Equine Nutrition Essentials or Equine Nutrition Advisor

Have your nutrition program with a Certified Advisor reviewed by her.

To get this service, you must book a consult with one of the Certified Advisors and indicate that you would like your program reviewed by Dr. Mottet. Dr. Mottet will communicate directly with your Advisor to make a recommendation for your horse. This plan will be communicated to you by your Advisor.

On a very limited basis, Dr. Mottet is taking on-farm clients in Ocala Florida. Contact us directly to find out about availability.

Virtual appointments are not available at this time.
